Shorts Remix

YouTube's Remix turns part of another video into your own Short, as Sound, Green Screen, Cut (1 to 5 seconds), Collab, a template or an AI remix. On a Short tap Remix; on a long video tap Share > Remix. Creators control it per video in YouTube Studio under "Shorts remixing".

To remix a video into a YouTube Short, tap Remix on a Short, or Share > Remix under a long-form or music video, then choose Sound, Cut, Green Screen, Collab or a template (YouTube Help). The remix opens in the Shorts camera with the original's audio, clip or picture ready to use, and the finished Short credits the source with a link back to it. Almost anything public can be remixed, Shorts, long videos and music videos alike, unless its creator turned remixing off.

How do I remix a video on YouTube?

  1. From a Short: open it, tap Remix, and pick Cut this video, Green screen, Collab or Use this template. Layouts changes how the two videos are arranged.
  2. From a long-form or music video: tap Share under the player, then Remix, then the option; for audio choose Use this sound.
  3. From a sound: in the Shorts player tap the sound's name, then Use this sound.
  4. Record or add your own clips, then post the Short as usual.

In YouTube's creator updates of May 2026 the Remix button moved from below the player into the Share menu (YouTube Help), which is why older guides show it in a different place.

The remix types

Sound uses the audio of another Short, a long video or a music video, up to 90 seconds of a music video, though some labels limit it to 30. Cut lifts a 1 to 5 second piece of a video, picture and sound together, to open or punctuate a Short. Green Screen puts another video behind the creator, the classic reaction layout; with a music video it can take the picture only or picture and sound. Collab places a Short beside another Short, for duets. Templates reuse another Short's format, letting a creator drop their own clips into its timing. AI remix generates a new video with new audio from a typed prompt and up to three reference images; Help says it works in English and may still be rolling out (YouTube Help).

Templates got easier in 2025: in a Creator Insider video that year, YouTube's chief product officer Johanna Voolich said a template's clips could now be added from the camera roll all at once, where before each segment had to be filled one at a time.

A remix can itself be remixed. Remixed Shorts still follow the copyright and reused content rules: a Short that only repeats someone else's video with nothing added earns nothing from Shorts revenue sharing.

Credit and the /source page

A video remix credits its source in the Shorts player with a link; an audio remix credits it on the sound's page. To see every Short built on one video, George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! network, found in Dec 2024 an address YouTube does not advertise: youtube.com/source/VIDEO_ID/shorts, with the video's ID in place of VIDEO_ID, lists the Shorts that used it. It is covered on its own page, See Which Shorts Used a Video. Creators can also see views from visual remixes in YouTube Studio's reach report, under the traffic source "Remixed video" (YouTube Help).

How do I stop people remixing my videos?

Every Short is open to remixing by default. In YouTube Studio go to Content, open the video, click Show more, find Shorts remixing, choose the setting and Save; it can also be set at upload or for many videos at once (YouTube Help). Partners who manage rights in Content Manager can opt out of audio and video remixing separately.

What happens to remixes when the original goes

If the original is deleted, restricted from remixing, or blurred or trimmed in Studio, audio remixes are muted, set to Unlisted and deleted after 30 days; the remixer is emailed and can download the video without the sound to repost with another track. Video remixes are deleted outright, though their views still count toward the remixer's lifetime views. Creators get at most one remix notification a day and three a week (YouTube Help).

Frequently asked questions

How do I do a green screen remix on YouTube Shorts? Open the Short and tap Remix, or under a long YouTube video tap Share > Remix, then choose Green screen; the video becomes the background while you record over it.

Where did the Remix button go on YouTube? Since YouTube's May 2026 creator updates, Remix for long-form videos sits in the Share menu under the player rather than as its own button.

Can I turn off remixing on my YouTube videos? Yes. In YouTube Studio open the video under Content, click Show more and change "Shorts remixing", or change it in bulk.

How long can a YouTube Cut remix be? A Cut remix on YouTube takes 1 to 5 seconds of a video, with its picture and sound.

What happens to my remix if the original YouTube video is deleted? YouTube mutes an audio remix, sets it to Unlisted and deletes it after 30 days; a video remix is deleted straight away.
