Super Chat and Super Stickers

Super Chat lets YouTube viewers pay to highlight a message in a live stream or Premiere chat, and Super Stickers to post an animated sticker there. Creators need the fan funding tier of the YouTube Partner Program (500 subscribers) and get 70% of net revenue.

Super Chat lets a viewer pay to make their message stand out in the live chat of a YouTube live stream or Premiere, and Super Stickers to post an animated sticker there; the more they pay, the longer it stays pinned at the top of the chat (Buy a Super Chat). A creator turns them on in YouTube Studio > Earn > Supers once the channel reaches the fan funding tier of the YouTube Partner Program (500 subscribers plus 3,000 watch hours or 3 million Shorts views) and accepts the Commerce Product Module, which pays 70% of net revenue. YouTube launched Super Chat in January 2017 and Super Stickers in 2019.

How does Super Chat work?

A viewer opens the live chat, chooses Super Chat or Super Sticker, picks an amount (and a sticker from a pack, for stickers) and pays. The message shows in a color that depends on the amount, and larger purchases are pinned at the top of the chat with a countdown ticker for longer; purchases under $5 USD do not appear in the ticker. Help publishes no table of colors, amounts or pin times. The message, the buyer's channel name, profile image and amount are public, a Super Chat belongs to the one video it was bought in, and the creator can end the stream before a ticker runs out (YouTube Help).

Viewers can spend up to $2,000 USD a day and $8,000 a week across Super Chats, Super Stickers, Super Thanks and Jewels combined, by the Super Chat Help page. Help's Super Thanks purchase page gives a lower general limit of $500 a day and $2,000 a week; as of Nov 6, 2026 the two pages disagree, and limits vary by country.

Who can turn on Super Chat?

A channel needs (YouTube Help):

  • The minimum for fan funding features in the YouTube Partner Program.
  • To live in a country or region where Supers are offered (the list runs to more than 100).
  • To accept YouTube's terms, including the Commerce Product Module.

When the channel qualifies, a Supers tab or card appears under Earn in YouTube Studio. Turn Super Chat and Super Stickers on there; the same tab turns them off. Once on, they are available automatically on eligible live streams and Premieres where live chat is on, which it is by default (Live Streaming, Premieres). YouTube Creators' older setup video, from when Studio's menu was still called Monetization (today Earn), shows the same one-click Get Started flow.

Supers are not available on age-restricted, unlisted, private or made for kids videos, on videos running a YouTube Giving fundraiser, or with live chat or comments turned off (YouTube Help; Made for Kids, Age Restriction). Help adds that Super Chat is not a crowdfunding or donation tool.

How much does a creator get from Super Chat?

The Commerce Product Module pays 70% of net revenue from Super Chat and Super Stickers, as it does for memberships and Super Thanks. Help's Super Thanks page describes "net" as after taxes and fees, including app store fees on iOS (YouTube Help). Payment comes through AdSense for YouTube, and Analytics shows it under Revenue > How you make money > Supers. Creators can see every purchase from the past 30 days in YouTube Studio.

Moderation

Super Chats and Super Stickers must follow the Community Guidelines. The creator and their moderators handle them like any other chat message: the channel's blocked words list applies, timed out, banned and blocked users cannot buy them, and a removed paid message still counts toward the creator's earnings. A moderated or removed Super Chat is not refunded, and when YouTube removes one for breaking policy, it says it gives its own share of the money to charity (YouTube Help).

How Super Chat changed

YouTube introduced Super Chat on Jan 12, 2017 with a few beta creators and planned a wide launch on Jan 31 for creators in 20 countries and viewers in more than 40. Messages were pinned for up to five hours. Super Stickers followed in 2019, and Super Thanks brought the same idea to ordinary uploads in 2021 (YouTube Official Blog). George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! network, introduced it to his creators in 2017 in "YouTube Super Chat is here - Your new revenue stream!", noting that it replaced YouTube's older Fan Funding, worked only in live streams, and was switched on then in the old Creator Studio under Channel. The bar to use it moved with the Partner Program: on Feb 13, 2017 George told his creators it needed 1,000 subscribers (Freedom!), and since Jun 13, 2023 it opens at 500 subscribers. Since November 2024, a creator who turns on gifts loses Super Stickers on vertical live streams, which gifts replace there (TechCrunch).
