Clips
A YouTube clip is a 5 to 60 second piece of someone's video or live stream, with its own link, that plays on a loop. Make one with Clip under the video; creators turn Clips off in YouTube Studio under Settings, Channel, Advanced settings.
To clip a YouTube video, open it, choose Clip (under the video on a phone, under More on a computer), drag the slider over 5 to 60 seconds, add a title and choose Share clip. The clip gets its own link and plays that section on a loop, while the creator sees in YouTube Studio who made it and how often it is watched. Clipping is on by default for every channel; a creator who does not want it unchecks Allow viewers to clip my content in YouTube Studio. Clips are a YouTube feature for sharing a moment; a creator who wants a moment as a Short uses Shorts Remix or Studio's own clip tool instead.

How do I make a clip on YouTube?
On a computer:
- Open the video and click More (the three dots), then Clip.
- Type a title of up to 140 characters.
- Drag the slider to pick the section, between 5 and 60 seconds.
- Click Share clip, then copy the link or send it to a social network.
On Android, iPhone and iPad, swipe the row of buttons under Subscribe to the right and tap Clip, set the slider, then tap Share clip (Help). If there is no Clip button, the creator has turned Clips off, the video is a live stream without DVR, or the video is of a kind that does not offer it.
Where are my clips?
Every clip you make is listed in the YouTube app under the You tab, in Your clips, and in the Clips library at youtube.com/feed/clips. To delete one, open that list, tap More beside the clip, then Delete clip and Delete forever. Deleting it removes it for everyone, including people who have its link (Help).
Who can see a clip
Clips are public: anyone who can watch the original video can watch and share the clip, and clips may appear in some search and discovery surfaces. A clip disappears when the original is deleted, made private or removed for breaking the Community Guidelines; clips of an unlisted video stay up (Help).
How do I turn off Clips on my YouTube channel?
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Settings in the left menu.
- Choose Channel > Advanced settings.
- Under Clips, uncheck Allow viewers to clip my content.
- Click Save.
The switch covers the whole channel. To stop one person instead, add them to the channel's Hidden users list, which also stops them clipping; words on the channel's blocked words list cannot be used in clip titles (Help).
George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! network, walked through these steps in a July 2021 video, "How to Disable YouTube Clips", for creators who would rather keep their moments on their own channel: once the box is unchecked and saved, a refresh of the watch page shows no Clip button, and checking the box again brings the button back on every video. At the time, he said, Clips were reaching the largest channels first.
Clips for creators
In YouTube Studio, the Clips section of a video shows how many clips were made from it, the views of each and who made them, and each clip can be shared, played, reported or its maker hidden from the channel. A source video's owner can turn a whole clip into a Short, and clips of videos that allow remixing can be remixed (Help; Shorts Remix). Studio also has its own tool for creators to cut clips and Shorts from their own uploads: Content, the video, Clips and Shorts, then Create clip or Short (Help).
Clips on live streams
A live stream can be clipped only if it has DVR on, and only inside the DVR window; the clips become watchable once the stream ends and is posted as a video (Help; Live Streaming).
History
George Vanous covered the feature in an early look in June 2021, "New YouTube Clips sneak peek!": a Clip button under the video, a short title, start and stop handles, and a link with the word clip in it that plays only that section. His notes from 2021 record that the Clip button then showed on gaming videos but not on all others, and that YouTube offered no list of every clip people had made; both have changed, since the button is now on by default for every channel and creators see every clip of their videos in Studio.
What creators say
In a 2021 video made while Clips was still in limited release, Howfinity reported clicking through almost 100 channels and finding the Clip button on only five. The video expected it to be "very valuable" once everyone had it, as a way to share a moment on other sites without editing a section out by hand.
In his June 2021 first look, George Vanous of Freedom! said what he liked most was that a viewer can go from a clip to the full video right away, which he found Twitch's older clipping feature did not make so easy.
Frequently asked questions
How long can a YouTube clip be? A YouTube clip must be at least 5 seconds and at most 60 seconds long, and it plays on a loop.
Can creators see who clipped their YouTube video? Yes. In YouTube Studio, each video's Clips section lists every clip with its views and the account that made it.
Why is there no Clip button on a YouTube video? The creator may have turned Clips off for the channel, or the video is a live stream without DVR, or past its DVR window.
Do YouTube clips stay up if the video is deleted? No. YouTube removes clips when the original video is deleted, made private or removed for a Community Guidelines violation; clips of unlisted videos stay.
Can I turn off Clips on my YouTube channel? Yes. In YouTube Studio, go to Settings > Channel > Advanced settings and uncheck Allow viewers to clip my content.
