Hype

Hype is a YouTube button that lets viewers push a video they love up a weekly leaderboard during its first 7 days. Each viewer gets 3 free hypes a week, smaller channels earn more points per hype, and it is open to Partner Program channels with 500 to 500,000 subscribers.

Hype is a button under eligible YouTube videos, in the mobile app, that a viewer taps to help a video in its first seven days climb a weekly leaderboard; every signed-in viewer gets three free hypes a week, reset on Monday at midnight local time (YouTube Help). Each hype adds points, and smaller channels get bigger bonuses, so a fan can do more for a 1,000-subscriber channel than for a big one. Hype is meant to help rising creators: it is open to channels in the YouTube Partner Program with 500 to 500,000 subscribers.

How does YouTube Hype work?

  1. Open an eligible video in the YouTube app, signed in, within seven days of its upload.
  2. Tap Hype under the video. A hype cannot be undone.
  3. Use the week's three free hypes on one video (up to three times) or on different ones.
  4. The video's points go toward the weekly leaderboard for the viewer's country.

Source: YouTube Help. The leaderboard at youtube.com/feed/hype is the same for everyone in a country, not personalized; videos that reach it get a "Hyped" badge for their first seven days, and a channel's most frequent hypers each month earn a Hype Star badge.

Hype points

Points scale against channel size so that small creators can compete. YouTube's own examples: a hype for a channel with 500 subscribers is worth 7,500 points, and one for a channel with 500,000 subscribers is worth 50. YouTube does not publish the full formula between those two points.

Which videos can be hyped?

Only long-form videos in their first seven days, from channels in the eligible range. Shorts, live streams and Premieres while live, unlisted and private videos, videos made for kids, age-restricted videos, misleading or clickbait videos, videos with copyright claims and YouTube Giving fundraiser videos cannot be hyped (YouTube Help). A channel that grows past 500,000 subscribers, or leaves the YPP, loses access.

For creators

Hype is on by default for eligible channels and can be turned off in YouTube Studio, under Settings > Channel > Advanced settings in vidIQ's 2025 walkthrough (YouTube Help). Hypes are anonymous: creators cannot see who hyped (YouTube Help), though YouTube Studio reports hype counts, which TechCrunch noted at the global launch. In Brazil, Japan, Korea and Taiwan, viewers can also hype with paid Jewels during a video's first seven days, which can put their handle in a recognition section of the description (Gifts and Jewels).

History

YouTube first showed Hype at Made on YouTube in September 2024 as a limited beta, and expanded it worldwide on Aug 26, 2025 (TechCrunch). George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! network, noted it in his tips while it was still a beta for channels of 500 to 500,000 subscribers; the range has stayed the same.

More arrived in late 2025. In a Creator Insider video, YouTube said viewers who hype a video can share that hype as a public post on their channel's Posts tab, and that leaderboards now came by category as well, such as gaming or beauty. It also said Hype was not yet in every market, not every video could be hyped, and Hype worked only in the latest mobile app, not on desktop.

What creators say

In a 2025 video, vidIQ called Hype a potentially big new way to be discovered: the Hype section sits third in the app's Explore menu and, in vidIQ's view, all but replaces the retired Trending tab, promoting channels that have not broken through yet rather than videos already viral. Its caution: hype points do not push a video onto Home or into suggested videos, so a much-hyped video lives in the Hype section.

vidIQ also wondered what stops people making dummy accounts to hype their own videos, and noted that each country has its own leaderboard, so a Canadian video can rank in the United States if American viewers hype it. Its advice to small channels, given as opinion: ask viewers to hype a new video, even ahead of asking them to subscribe.
