Stable Volume and Voice Boost

Stable volume evens out the quiet and loud parts of a YouTube video, and Voice boost lowers background sound so speech is clearer; both are switches in the player's settings. Super resolution upscales low-resolution videos. Creators can opt out in YouTube Studio.

Stable volume and Voice boost are two audio switches in the YouTube player's Settings menu: Stable volume narrows the gap between a video's quiet and loud moments, and Voice boost turns background sound down so that speech stands out (YouTube Help). They belong to a family of automatic "quality enhancements" that also includes Super resolution, which makes low-resolution uploads look closer to HD. Viewers switch each one on or off for themselves; creators can stop YouTube applying them to their future uploads. The rest of YouTube's player options, from Playback Speed to Captions and Subtitles, work alongside them.

Stable volume

Stable volume is for videos whose sound swings: a whispered line followed by an explosion, or a quiet talk with a loud intro. With it on, YouTube reduces those swings so the volume does not need riding (Help). It is a switch in the player's Settings menu on the devices that offer it. Music listeners and anyone who wants a film's full dynamic range may prefer it off, since it squeezes the difference between soft and loud on purpose.

Voice boost

Voice boost makes dialogue easier to follow by lowering background sound and emphasizing speech (Help). It helps with videos recorded in noisy places or mixed with loud music under the talking. Like Stable volume, it is an on or off switch among the player's settings, and Help notes that a viewer's own accessibility settings can take precedence in some cases. Help does not list which devices offer it, and the menu differs between apps, so a device without the switch simply does not have it yet.

Super resolution

Super resolution uses what Help calls "Google-built technology" to raise low-resolution uploads toward HD. Where it is applied, the video's quality menu offers the Super resolution version beside the original upload resolution, so a viewer who wants the untouched original can choose it (Help). Help names no resolution below which it starts, and it is not applied to every video.

How do creators opt out?

The enhancements are applied automatically, and YouTube says they are not applied to all videos. A creator who does not want them:

  1. Signs in to YouTube Studio on a computer.
  2. Clicks Settings, then Channel, then Advanced settings.
  3. Unchecks Let YouTube enhance visual quality (Super resolution and other image changes) or Let YouTube enhance audio quality (Stable volume, Voice boost and other sound changes), or both.
  4. Clicks Save.

The change covers future uploads only; videos already posted and ads are not affected. If a creator turns enhancements off, viewers may lose Stable volume or Super resolution on that channel's new videos (Help).

What creators say

In a video from when Stable volume was still rolling out, ClosetYeti stopped talking and let the quiet background music play with the setting on: it was slowly raised until it was, in ClosetYeti's words, "just distracting". The video suggests it may suit people watching on a TV or a phone speaker, says that for most others it "just sounds bad", and recommends turning it off. That is one creator's listening test.

In an open letter to YouTube in video form from the same period, Curtis Judd, who teaches audio and mixing on YouTube, accepted that Stable volume helps most viewers but argued that for channels teaching mixing or reviewing microphones it hides the nuances viewers came to hear and can make dialogue sound overcompressed. He asked YouTube to keep its loudness ceiling of minus 14 LUFS but let each creator limit how far Stable volume may boost their videos, suggesting a floor around minus 23 or 24 LUFS, the target many broadcasters use.
