How do I change the speed on YouTube?
On a computer (Speed up or slow down YouTube videos):
- Hover over the player and click the Settings gear.
- Click Playback speed.
- Drag the slider, use - and +, or click one of the speed chips under it.
On Android, iPhone or iPad, tap the video once, tap the Settings gear, tap Playback speed, and choose. On smart TVs and streaming devices, select Settings > Speed on the watch page; YouTube Help says not every TV has it.
On Nov 6, 2026 the computer menu showed a large readout (such as "1.00x"), a slider from 0.25 to 2 that moves in steps of 0.05, so 1.15x or 1.85x are possible, and chips for 1.0, 1.25, 1.5, 2.0 and 3.0, the 3.0 chip carrying a Premium badge for an account without Premium.
Press and hold for 2x
Click and hold anywhere on the video on a computer, or touch and hold it in the app, and it plays at twice the speed until you release (Speed up or slow down YouTube videos). It is the quickest way to skim a slow part without changing your setting. With Premium, holding can also offer Jump Ahead, which skips to the part most viewers go to.

Faster than 2x with Premium
On Sep 26, 2025 YouTube made speeds up to 4x, in 0.05x steps, a standard Premium feature on Android, iPhone, iPad and the web, after testing it with Premium members on youtube.com/new. Premium on Android also has Auto speed, which adjusts the speed automatically for English videos (YouTube Premium benefits). Without Premium the limit is 2x. See YouTube Premium.
What creators say
In an Aug 23, 2019 vidIQ video, its presenter ran through the speed keys, Shift + period up to double speed and Shift + comma down to a quarter, then said he watches most YouTube videos at 1.5x or 2x "so I can get through more video content", and recommended it most for educational videos. Slow speeds, in his view, are mostly for comedy.
Mike Murphy, in a Jun 15, 2020 tutorial, made the same case by comparing YouTube to podcasts, which many people already play faster, and showed the custom speed slider the menu had then.
