Keyboard Shortcuts
YouTube's main keyboard shortcuts on a computer are k to play or pause, j and l to jump 10 seconds, f for full screen, m to mute, c for captions, and comma and period to step frames; Shift + ? shows the full list in the player.
YouTube's most useful keyboard shortcuts are k (play or pause), j and l (back or forward 10 seconds), f (full screen), m (mute), c (captions), , and . (one frame back or forward while paused), and Shift + ?, which opens the full list inside the player. They work on youtube.com in a browser on a computer. Click the video once first: YouTube Help says that in its newer computer layout the shortcuts only work after you select the player, and hovering over some player buttons shows their key (Keyboard shortcuts for YouTube).
Below is every shortcut YouTube publishes, from two places that agree almost everywhere: the YouTube Help list and the Keyboard shortcuts panel built into the player. Where a key is only in one of them, the table says so.

Sources for the tables: Keyboard shortcuts for YouTube, YouTube Help, and the player's Keyboard shortcuts panel (Shift + ?), both read Nov 6, 2026. Rows marked "player panel only", and the whole 360 degree table, are in the player's panel but not on the Help page.
Keys that trip people up
- Shortcuts do nothing: click the video first. A key typed while the search box or a comment field has the cursor goes into that box instead.
- The arrows change volume instead of seeking: the arrow keys act on whatever control has focus. Help describes Left and Right as seeking and Up and Down as volume when the seek bar is selected; click the video and they behave.
- Comma and period change the speed: Shift is held. Shift turns them into < and >, the speed keys.
- Chapter keys on a Mac: Help gives Option + arrow on a Mac and Ctrl + arrow on Windows; the player's own panel shows only Control.
What creators say
vidIQ's Rob opened his walkthrough of the shortcuts, posted on Aug 23, 2019, with Shift + ?, promising it would "rock your world" for anyone watching on a computer, then went through every key in YouTube's pop-up list and a few it leaves out.
In his test, Shift + N played the next video in a playlist or the Up next suggestion, while Shift + P "only seemed to work" when he was watching a playlist, which is what the tables above say today.
His own habit, offered as advice: he watched most YouTube videos at one and a half or double speed (Shift + .) to get through more, calling it "really valuable" for educational videos, while slow speeds were mostly for comedy.
His list of the time also had o to cycle the caption text's brightness and w to cycle the caption background's transparency. Neither is on the lists this page was built from, read Nov 6, 2026, so treat them as keys of the older player.
