Frame by Frame with Comma and Period
On YouTube on a computer, pause the video, then press the period key to step one frame forward and the comma key to step one frame back.
To watch a YouTube video frame by frame, pause it on a computer, then press . (period) to move forward one frame and , (comma) to move back one frame. Both keys are on YouTube's own list of keyboard shortcuts, which says they work while the video is paused, and the player's built-in shortcut list (press Shift + ?) names them "Next frame (while paused)" and "Previous frame (while paused)". There is no on-screen button for it: the keys are the only way.

How do I go frame by frame on YouTube?
- Open the video on youtube.com on a computer.
- Click the video once so the player has the keyboard's attention. YouTube Help notes that in its newer computer layout, shortcuts only work after you click the player (Keyboard shortcuts).
- Pause with k (or the space bar).
- Press . to step forward one frame, or , to step back one frame. Each press moves exactly one frame.
- Press k again to carry on playing.
If the video starts playing instead of stepping, it was not paused. If nothing happens, the cursor is probably in the search box or a comment field: click the video and try again.
Keep Shift off. With Shift held, the same two keys become > and <, which speed up and slow down playback instead (Keyboard shortcuts).
What it is useful for
- Sports and games: settle whether a foot was over the line, a goal crossed, or a hit landed before the timer ran out.
- Tutorials: freeze the one frame where a menu, a code line or a hand position is readable.
- Animation and editing: count frames to study timing, or check a cut.
- Choosing an image: find the sharpest frame, then copy it with the browser's menu (Right-Click Twice to Copy a Video Frame). Creators picking a thumbnail from their own video can do the same, then upload it as a custom thumbnail.
For coarser jumps, the arrow keys move 5 seconds, j and l move 10 seconds, and the number keys jump to a tenth of the video each; the whole list is on Keyboard Shortcuts.
On phones and TVs
YouTube's frame keys are keyboard shortcuts, and YouTube Help lists them for computers only. BrenTech, in a Jan 19, 2024 video, gave phone viewers the same heads-up: on iPhone or Android you cannot step frame by frame, though you can slow the video down with Settings > Playback speed. Help describes no frame-step control in the YouTube app on phones and tablets. The nearest thing it documents is precise seeking: drag the scrubber up and a row of thumbnails appears to pick from (Use chapters, mentioned people and places, & seeking features). Help says nothing about frame stepping on TVs or game consoles.
What creators say
George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! YouTube network, uses the keys to pick the best frame before saving it. In his Aug 16, 2026 video he pauses, presses the period key to move forward one frame at a time because he "didn't like" his facial expression on the first frame, stops on a better one, and saves it with two right-clicks (Right-Click Twice to Copy a Video Frame).
vidIQ's Rob, in an Aug 23, 2019 video, recommended the period and comma keys for hitting "an exact frame", with one caveat from his own use: stepping "does sometimes cause a little bit of buffering". That is one person's experience on the YouTube of the time.
Frequently asked questions
Why don't the comma and period keys work on YouTube? They only step while the video is paused, and only when the player has focus. Pause with k, click the video once, then press the comma or period key.
What key goes to the next frame on YouTube? The period key (.) moves a paused YouTube video forward one frame, and the comma key (,) moves it back one frame.
Can I go frame by frame on YouTube on my phone? YouTube's frame-by-frame keys need a keyboard, and YouTube Help describes no frame-step control in the app. Precise seeking, dragging the scrubber up to see thumbnails, is the closest it documents.
How many frames does each press move on YouTube? One frame per press, so in a 30 frames per second video, 30 presses move one second.
Why does YouTube change speed when I press comma or period? Shift is held down: Shift plus the period key (>) speeds a YouTube video up and Shift plus the comma key (<) slows it down. Release Shift to step frames.
