See a Video's Hidden Tags
YouTube hides a video's tags from viewers, but on a computer anyone can read them in the page source: open view-source: before the watch address and search for name="keywords".
To see a YouTube video's hidden tags on a computer, put view-source: in front of its address (for example view-source:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kEn58iCruwc), press Enter, then press Ctrl + F (Command + F on a Mac) and search for name="keywords". The tags are listed after content=, separated by commas. Viewers never see tags on the watch page; only the creator sees them in YouTube Studio. They are still sent to every browser inside the page's code, which is why this works.
Tags matter less than people think. YouTube Help says they play a minimal role in discovery, and are mainly useful when a video's subject is often misspelled (Add tags to your YouTube videos). The title, thumbnail and description do far more (Titles Descriptions and Tags).

How do I see the tags on a YouTube video?
- Open the video on youtube.com and click the address bar.
- Press Home to go to the start of the address and type
view-source:with no space, so it readsview-source:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=.... - Press Enter. A page of code opens.
- Press Ctrl + F (Command + F on a Mac) and type
keywords. - The line reads
<meta name="keywords" content="tag one, tag two, ...">. Everything between the quotes aftercontent=is the tag list.
Another way to reach the same code: right-click an empty part of the watch page (not the video) and choose View page source, or press Ctrl + U.
If the list reads only "video, sharing, camera phone, video phone, free, upload", that is YouTube's generic default, not the creator's: on Nov 6, 2026 Vi.ki saw exactly that list (in the page's language) on a video with no tags of its own showing.
George Vanous, who runs the Freedom! YouTube network, kept this trick in his tips with the note that tags are edited in Studio but anyone can read them this way. Checked on Nov 6, 2026 on his own video kEn58iCruwc, the keywords line listed his tags, starting "Freedom!, Freedom! Family, Get more views".
What tags still do
YouTube Help describes tags as descriptive keywords that help people find a video, but says they matter most when the subject is commonly misspelled, and otherwise play a minimal role. It also warns that stuffing a description with tags breaks its spam, deceptive practices and scams policies (Add tags to your YouTube videos). So copying a successful video's tags is unlikely to move your own video much: look at its title, thumbnail and first lines of description instead.
How the 500-character limit counts
The YouTube Data API sets the tag limit at 500 characters for all tags together, and explains the odd counting: commas between tags count, and a tag containing a space counts as if wrapped in quotation marks, so its two quotes count too. "Foo-Baz" is seven characters; "Foo Baz" is nine.
George measured the counter in Studio and found the same pattern: "a b" counts as 5, "ab,cd" as 5, and "a b,cd" as 8, and a tag needs at least two characters. Hyphenate multi-word tags, or drop the spaces, if you are near the limit.
Frequently asked questions
Can viewers see YouTube tags? Not on the watch page. YouTube tags show only in the creator's YouTube Studio and in the page source, where the keywords meta line lists them.
How do I see tags on YouTube on my phone? The YouTube app gives no way to read tags. On a phone browser, view-source: may not be available, so use a computer.
Do YouTube tags help videos rank? YouTube Help says tags play a minimal role in discovery and mostly help when a subject is often misspelled. Titles, thumbnails and descriptions matter more.
What is the YouTube tag limit? 500 characters for all the tags on a video together. Commas count, and a tag with a space in it counts two extra characters for its hidden quotation marks.
Why are a YouTube video's keywords just "video, sharing, camera phone"? That is YouTube's generic list, shown when the page carries no tags of the creator's.
