  8. Know why previews play silently. Videos on Home and in search play muted with captions in YouTube's inline player by design, and browsers such as Chrome only allow sound on autoplay after you have interacted with the site. Learn more
  1. Link to an exact second. Click Share under the video, tick Start at, type the time and click Copy, or add &t=90 to a watch address (or ?t=90 to a youtu.be link) to start at 1:30. Learn more
  2. Use the short link. youtu.be/ plus the video ID opens any video, and ?t= works on it too; yt.be is YouTube's own domain for its campaign links, so yt.be/@handle and yt.be/VIDEO_ID do not work. Learn more
  3. Share a channel's /live address, not one stream's link. youtube.com/@handle/live opens the current live stream while the channel is live and the channel page when it is not, so it never goes stale. Learn more
  4. Get any video's full-size thumbnail. Open https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg with the video's 11-character ID; if a small gray image appears, use hqdefault.jpg, which every video has. Thumbnails belong to their creators. Learn more
  5. See a video's hidden tags. Put view-source: in front of the watch address, press Enter, then search the page (Ctrl + F) for name="keywords"; the tags follow content=. Learn more
  6. Find a channel's ID. On the channel page, open its description (the About panel), scroll down and click Share channel > Copy channel ID; your own is also at youtube.com/account_advanced. Learn more

Shorts

  1. Give any Short the full player. Replace shorts/ in its address with watch?v= and press Enter to get the seek bar, speed, quality and keyboard shortcuts. Learn more
  2. See which Shorts used a video. Open youtube.com/source/VIDEO_ID/shorts to get a grid of the Shorts made from that video, each with its views. Learn more

Creators

  1. Test thumbnails and titles before guessing. In YouTube Studio on a computer, click A/B Testing under the thumbnail or in the title box and add up to three versions; YouTube picks the winner by watch time share, not clicks. Learn more
  2. Add chapters with three timestamps. Type timestamps and titles into the description, the first at 0:00, at least three in order and each chapter at least 10 seconds long. Learn more
  3. Dispute a claim within 5 days. Dispute a Content ID claim within 5 days of the claim and the revenue from the day it was placed is held for whoever wins; dispute later and only what is earned from the dispute date on is held. Learn more
  4. Check whether Restricted Mode hides your channel. Turn Restricted Mode on (profile photo > Restricted Mode), ideally in a browser or account you do not usually use, then search for your videos and open their links. Learn more
  5. Ask fans to Hype new videos. On channels in the Partner Program with 500 to 500,000 subscribers, each viewer gets three free hypes a week to push a video up a leaderboard in its first seven days, and smaller channels earn more points per hype. Learn more
  6. Jump straight to Studio pages. Add a path to studio.youtube.com/channel/YOUR_CHANNEL_ID/: /content/inspiration for saved ideas, /copyright/history for copyright removal requests, /monetization/affiliate_hub for Shopping affiliate offers. Learn more

Staying safe

  1. Turn on 2-Step Verification. YouTube requires it to join the Partner Program and to apply for the verification badge, and it recommends a passkey as the strongest method. Learn more
  2. Know Restricted Mode is a switch. If videos or comments are missing, check your profile photo > Restricted Mode; if the switch will not move, a school, workplace, parent or mobile provider has turned it on. Learn more

Frequently asked questions

What are the best hidden YouTube features? How do I start a YouTube video at a certain time? Click Share, tick Start at and copy the link, or add &t= and a number of seconds to the YouTube address yourself, such as &t=90 for 1:30.

What is the most important tip for YouTube creators? For safety, turn on 2-Step Verification, which YouTube requires for the Partner Program. For earnings, dispute a wrong Content ID claim within 5 days, so the video's revenue is held for whoever wins.
